Miami Falls Short In Penalties; Cosmos Advance To NASL Final

Playoffs are a funny thing. In American sports, playoffs separate the weak from the strong. The contenders from the pretenders. Yet somehow, they also have a way of allowing the underdog to rise to the occasion and steal the spotlight time and time again. Miami F.C. could have played their very last game and the NASL modern record for goals, wins, points, and differential could not have saved them.

What. A. Ride. For those of you who have followed Miami F.C.’s journey with us, we can’t thank you enough. For those of you who are just seeing this for the first time, welcome to the club! We’ve had some real highs and lows together throughout the year. Poku beating Atlanta, 7-0 thrashing of the Deltas for the spring title, and Cincinnati coming to town and stealing the Open Cup Semi-Final from us have all led to this moment.

The Miami FC claims NASL Fall Season title, defeats FC Edmonton 2-1

The Miami FC made history Saturday night, as the team defeated FC Edmonton 2-1 to claim the North American Soccer League’s Fall Season title. The team becomes the first squad to win the Spring and Fall title in the same year.

It wasn’t easy, as the club had to outlast a valiant effort by the Canadian club. Not only that, but outer bands of Tropical Storm Philippe made the conditions beyond wet. However, two goals by Kwadwo Poku broke the league’s team season scoring record (61) and sealed all three points. A loss by San Francisco Deltas to Jacksonville Armada made the points unnecessary for the title, but the team will certainly take the win as they head into the The Championship semifinal.

Not only that, the win gave The Miami FC the NASL record for points in a season (69).

The squad now waits for the conclusion of games on Sunday, as they will either host New York Cosmos or North Carolina FC on Nov. 5 at 5 pm.

How The Miami FC went from Also-rans to Spring Season Champs

What a difference a year makes.

Back in 2016 with the spring season of the NASL drawing to a close, The Miami FC were struggling. Porous at the back and mis-firing up front, the promise the franchise showed off the pitch had not been fulfilled. They finished 11th of 11 and deserved no more than that.

Fast-forward 12 months and Alessandro Nesta’s men are playing scintillating soccer, marauding their way to the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals and trouncing teams by four goals… seven goals even, while also keeping clean sheets. So what has changed? In truth, it’s not been a revolution but an evolution.
